Endoscopy is the use of a small fiber-optic camera through naturally occurring holes in the body. Because endoscopy utilizes naturally occurring holes it is minimally invasive, and avoids the need for surgery including incisions, sutures, and extended healing times. In many situations endoscopic procedures to be performed on an outpatient basis (patients generally go home the same day) and patients return to their base-line function within 24 hours.
Our endoscopy equipment is state of the art for industry standards. Using instrument ports within the scopes we can perform a myriad of procedures. Visualization of the procedure is accomplished via our 55” surgery monitor in order to correctly identify structures, diagnose and treat certain conditions. At Advanced Animal Care of Colorado we have the equipment and expertise to perform both rigid and flexible endoscopic procedures including investigation of the:

GI (gastrointestinal) Tract

Gastric (stomach) foreign body retrieval: by inserting the flexible scope into the stomach we can visualize foreign material and use numerous instruments in order to retrieve them without ever cutting into the abdomen. See a video here.

Esophagus, stomach and proximal intestine exploration: we have the ability to directly visualize the lumen (interior surface) and obtain biopsies (tissue samples). Conditions where this is useful include but are not limited to: inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative disease, esophageal strictures, and delayed gastric emptying.

Proctoscopy to evaluate the anus, rectum and colon: because of the fragile nature of the colon we have specialized brushes in order to obtain delicate samples. Conditions where this is useful include but are not limited to: rectal polyps, colonic and rectal strictures, constipation, and concern for perforation.

Respiratory Tract

Nose: by using a combination of flexible and rigid endoscopy the nasal passages can be visualized from the front and the back sides.

Larynx and throat: these hard to reach and see areas can be readily visualized and samples of concerning areas can be obtained easily with endoscopy.

Trachea and main stem bronchi (the wind pipes): occasionally we find conditions where the scope needs to be inserted into chest in order to evaluate the respiratory system.

The Ears (otoscopy): otoscopy allows us direct visualization as well as the ability to perform deep ear flushes, and sample acquisition from within the middle ear.

The Urinary Tract and Female Reproductive System: these delicate and difficult to reach areas can be directly visualized without undergoing complicated and risky surgical interventions.

Transcervical insemination (please see the reproductive section here.)
